Dear Colleague

Five Additional Daily Trains to Fishguard

The Welsh Government announced on 29 March that it will be funding five additional trains to/from Fishguard Harbour Station, Monday – Saturday, planned to start from September 2011. These are in addition to the two current trains which connect with the midday and midnight ferry services.

The Welsh Government is committed to an informal community consultation on the timetable and I am writing to ask for your comments.

The preferred timetable follows a first round of consultation with Arriva Trains Wales, the North Pembrokeshire Transport Forum, All Points West Community Rail Partnership and the Regional Transport Consortium SWWITCH.

The preferred timetable has been developed following these meetings. A series of questions which we would also like your views, is attached at Annex One accompanying this letter, together with notes on why it is preferred.

I would welcome your comments and views during this consultation period. Please use the accompanying pre-paid envelope or alternatively you can write directly to Mark Price, Rail Unit, Integrated Transport Division, FREEPOST NAT 8910, Cathays Park, Cardiff. CF10 3NQ or e-mail Mark.price@wales.gsi.gov.uk

Please also find a Demographic Data Collection Form so that we can confirm the representation of replies that we have received. This is an anonymous exercise and data collected will only be used for the purpose of this informal consultation exercise. Replies should be sent in separately to your consultation response by using a separate pre-paid envelope.

We would like to receive your reply by Friday 17 June 2011 to enable your response to be fully considered.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Yours sincerely,

Mark Price

Timetable Strengths

•  Provides a good range of through journey opportunities including direct services to Manchester;

•  Makes efficient use of existing train resources;

•  Enables good travel opportunities to/from Cardiff, facilitating day trips;

•  Provides a 17:30 commuter/shopper departure from Carmarthen;

•  Includes the use of better quality trains e.g. Class 175’s;

•  Provides beneficial additional capacity on main line services, particularly in the evening peak out of Swansea;

•  Enables a late arrival into Fishguard (20:16), which is beneficial to longer distance travel including inbound tourism.

Other Timetable Changes

•  Requires changes to two existing services:

ο  The current 10:05 Swansea – Pembroke Dock service would commence from Carmarthen (passengers from Swansea would be able to connect into the Pembroke service at Carmarthen from an existing Swansea service) (this applies Monday – Friday in school term times only. The Swansea connection is maintained on Saturdays, bank holidays and school holidays.);

ο  The current 15:14 Cardiff to Swansea train (Swanline service) would be retimed to a 15:30 departure, enabling it to link with a Swansea – Fishguard service as a through train.

Questions

1. Do you support the proposed timetable? YES/NO.

2. If you answered “NO” above, please explain why.

3.  Where do you want to travel by train from/to Fishguard Harbour (please choose as many as you like)

•  Carmarthen

•  Swansea

•  Cardiff

•  Other (please state where, up to 4 places)

4. Any further comments

Thank you for your time completing this questionnaire. We look forward to hearing from you.

Newidiadau Eraill i’r Amserlen

  • Bydd yn golygu newid dau wasanaeth sydd eisoes yn bodoli:

(Mae hyn yn berthnasol o ddydd Llun i ddydd Gwener yn ystod y tymor ysgol yn unig. Mae cysylltiad Abertawe yn cael ei gynnig hefyd ar ddydd Sadwrn, gŵyl y banc a gwyliau ysgol);
    • Byddai’r gwasanaeth trên presennol 15:14 Caerdydd i Abertawe (gwasanaeth Swanline) yn cael ei ail-amserlennu i adael am 15:30, gan alluogi iddo gysylltu â gwasanaeth Abertawe – Abergwaun fel trên uniongyrchol.

One Response to Welsh Government Consultation – CORRECTED

  1. Dafydd Williams

    The proposed service from Fishguard/Goodwick is very welcome. It is essential that Goodwick station is reopened immediately as the walk to the harbour station is long and exposed. My most frequent journeys are to Carmarthen,Swansea,Cardiff,Derby and London Heathrow via Paddington. Adequate parking will be required at Goodwick. Parking at Haverfordwest is already inadequate at times necessitating a quick road journey to Whitland.
