Happy birthday

reconstruction of Trevithick's first railway engine

Changing the world

At school he was a “disobedient, slow, obstinate, spoiled boy, frequently absent and very inattentive”.

But 207 years ago his steam railway engine – the world’s first – hauled ten tons of iron along the railway from Penydarren to Abercynon.

The railway age was born, at 2.4 miles per hour.

Happy 240th birthday Richard Trevithick, born at Illogan near Redruth on April 13th 1771.
